WHO WE ARE Pack 1 Manville is part of the Northwest District of the Southeastern New England Narragansett Council of the Boy Scouts of America. St. James Church, located on Division Street in Manville, Rhode Island, is where our meetings and many of our events are held. Established in 1963, Pack 1 Manville has been a part of the Lincoln community for well over half a century.
The Boy Scouting adventure starts with Cub Scouting, which is a program designed for boys and girls entering kindergarten through 5th grade (or ages 5-11). The program emphasizes shared leadership, learning about the community, family understanding, character development, citizen training, and personal fitness. Although the program builds on these concepts over time, children are welcome to join no matter the grade or season!
Cub Scouting also serves as an introduction to The Boy Scout Program. Over the years, children learn about the skills that are frequently used by the troop. Upon completion of the Cub Scout program, families and scouts join together in a ceremony to congratulate the children's hard work! Any child entering grade 6 can join a troop, but for our cubs, it is a special privilege to move onto the troop. Not only will they rejoin other pack graduates, they move forward with knowledge and confidence.
MEETINGS Den meetings take place on Thursday evenings. During the school year, den meetings are offered nearly every week, with the exception of the Lions Dens (kindergarten). Our lions are the youngest group, and their den meetings are typically the first Thursday of each month. Once a child is assigned to a den, that den's leader will reach out to families with changes or updates to the calendar.
Pack Meetings are typically held 1 Friday evening each month. These meetings serve as an opportunity for scouts to sing songs, show off the work they've done in their dens, and for all dens to gather together to socialize. During these meetings, scouts also receive their advancement awards for completed adventures (tasks from their handbooks).
In addition to pack and den meetings, there are usually several other pack activities scheduled throughout each month. These activities are optional for the scout to attend. Often advancement adventures may be completed at these events, so attendance is strongly recommended. If a family misses an event, no worries! Adventures can be completed anywhere and anytime, with either the family or the den. The program is about learning and experiencing all life has to offer, and that might look a little different for each family.
WHO CAN JOIN Boys and girls that are entering kindergarten in September of this year. Any child that is entering grades 1-5 can also register for our program. We welcome children from Lincoln and other towns in Rhode Island. When registering your child for a pack, you have the option to choose the pack of your choice regardless of where you live. Things to consider are the distance from your home, which community you want to be an active member in, and your child's familiarity with the pack's facility and members (if none is established, that's okay too!)
OUR LEADERS Scouting would not be possible without the leadership of our adult volunteers! These individuals are responsible for the vision and execution within the pack. Parents of our scouts are always welcome and encouraged to get as involved as possible in the way that suits them best. Den leaders help run our weekly meetings and are the core of the program. The Cub Master is there is help the den leaders each week and offer support. In 2022, Pack 1 Manville instated Amanda Leo as Cub Master. In addition to the adults that make the den meetings possible, Committee Members bring ideas to the table and make decisions on what activities the pack participates in. All parents are welcome and encouraged to be a part of Committee Meetings. Finally, Pack 1 Manville's Committee Chair is Ann Rageotte. Ann has many years of experience and is a wonderful asset to the Lincoln community. It is Ann's responsibility to oversee the pack's entire program, to ensure that it functions to BSA standards, and to serve as a resource for the pack parents and leaders.
OUR AWARDS Pack 1 Manville has been recognized by the Boy Scouts of America numerous times. Most recently, the Pack was awarded the Journey to Excellence Gold Award in both 2017 and 2018, the National Summertime Pack Award in 2017 and we are on track to be awarded again for 2018. On the fun side, our Pack was awarded "Best Dressed Medics in the Field" at the 2018 Chuckwagon Derby in Rhode Island.
